I call this piece Touching Grace, and I made it while thinking of a memory I had as a child. I helped rescue a young hummingbird trapped inside a van. I remember holding it in my hands and thinking how fragile and beautiful it was. It was pure and delicate as it rested amid my cupped palms. I had the strongest urge to keep it for one long moment, to protect this tiny creature from the violent world outside. It only took a moment before I remembered that my favorite part of sitting in the flowers was seeing these birds zooming about. It was grace I was holding and it wasn’t mine to keep. So I opened my hands and the tiny creature flew up and waited for a beat inches from my nose before zooming away. I knew that one moment was far more valuable than the dozens on moments I could have had keeping it.
The reason I brought this up is that one, the reason you paint is important. Two, I believe that the greatest of artists, know how to pick their moments. Like photographers snapping series of images to find the one that hit the perfect angle. An artist must pick one angle, light source, and view point to make an amazing piece. People can look at the unique day to day scenes and see nothing. An artist can look at nothing and create dozens of scenes greater than the everyday. As an artist you can become inspired by the subtle nuances that surround us and only your unique view point can make others take a second look. It is an artists power to capture an audiences attention and make then think something new.
