Have you ever broken a promise you meant to keep? Have you ever had to leave someone or something you care very dearly for? I made Breaking the Pack because I had just left something I cared deeply for and I felt the need to create. This giant colored pencil piece took me almost a week to finish and the whole time I was a mix of rage and regret. All I could do was think of my mistakes and when I finally finished I realized that despite my feelings this piece didn’t look angry at all. If anything he just looked sad, and sorry. As he holds onto the wolf by his side, falling to pieces he has no sign of anger in his features but rather a soft kindness as if he knows and accepts what will happen next. It confused me at first and then I realized that even if he was leaving his pack, as I had left, he gave one last moment of comfort to the wolf. Whatever you may have lost or broken you still hold the memories and one moment of tragedy doesn’t erase that. Never forget, and always think of those around you- you may not be alone in your suffering. So forgive others as well as yourself. At least that was what I was thinking about when I designed this piece and when I finished it.
